Weeding through the dozens of options for the best coding bootcamps and coding classes in New York City can be exhausting. Here at One Month we’ve taken it upon ourselves to skim through all the best ratings, testimonials, and coding course options to bring you (in the words of Frank Sinatra) “the king of the hill, a number one” best coding courses in old New York, New York!
While this list is certainly anything but comprehensive and each student’s needs are unique, here are a few recommendations of coding schools and bootcamps that stand out.
1. General Assembly NYC

General Assembly has campuses around the globe, but New York City is where it all started. Located smack in the middle of the Flatiron District, General Assembly (or GA as many people refer to it) has courses across the coding spectrum. Students can choose from immersive software engineering and data science to part-time courses in front-end web development and JavaScript development. Most immersive courses, meaning those that are full-time and meet in person, start at around $3000.
2. Full Stack Academy

Offering immersive software engineering courses and summer coding programs in addition to fellowships to study web development in New York City, Full Stack is another excellent NYC coding option. Courses here focus on teaching fullstack JavaScript and costs $17,910 in New York versus $15,910 in Chicago with an option for a $1,000 scholarship for women. Courses begin every month or two and applications are due roughly the month before a course starts.
3. Hack Reactor

Hack Reactor offers part-time, full-time, in-person, and online coding course options. Rated one of the best options by outlets like Course Report and switchup, the San Francisco-based company has a campus in New York City in addition to a few others around the U.S. If you’re worried about leaving Fido at home while you learn to code, don’t—they campuses are pup-friendly. A stand-out quality about Hack Reactor is that they focus on teaching their students how to think like programmers in alongside teaching them how to code.
4. App Academy’s

App Academy takes an interesting approach to payment: charging only once you’re hired as a developer. They select students based on skills and require just a refundable deposit of $3,000 that you get back if you’re not placed in a job that lands you at least $50,000 in compensation. The curriculum is led by tech companies and industry experts and there’s an overall focus on career coaching.
5. Codesmith

Unlike some of the other NYC options on this list, Codesmith has a clear focus on software engineering. Their coding bootcamp has been highly rated by Quora, Course Report, and Switch Up to name a few. Codesmith is focused on the whole package, teaching students JavaScript from front end to back including fullstack and React across 12 weeks.
Interested students can set up a campus tour while upcoming start dates are all listed on Codesmith’s website.
6. Flatiron School

The Flatiron School offers coding classes that blend the typical online class option with on-campus learning opportunities. Flatiron has campuses in several major cities around the globe, one of those being New York City thanks to a partnership with the WeWork coworking space.
While the courses offered here span edtech landscape from data science to and design, software engineering is a central element. Students can choose from a wide array of classes from those focused on the basics like HTML and CSS to the more advanced Python and JavaScript.
While tuition for Flatiron courses can be costly. Although, keep in mind that there are some scholarships available and even coding scholarships just for women. If you’re curious about learning more, check out one of their online info sessions or take their free Coding Bootcamp Prep course to see if their learning style is right for you.
7. Noble Desktop

Self-declared New York’s top design and coding school since 1990, Noble Desktop offers courses in both coding and design. From website and graphics to interfaces and videos, iOS apps, and animations, the breadth of options at Noble Desktop is appealing.
On the coding courses side of things, they offer everything a budding programmer could want: courses on learning HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. They also offer bootcamps that cover the HTML and CSS basics as well, but also to learn Ruby on Rails, WordPress, and Python. For those curious about SQL programming, there’s a bootcamp for that, too.
8. Queens Tech Academy

While most of the coding offerings in New York are located in Manhattan, not everything is on that tiny island. A perhaps refreshing departure from the previous coding class options, the Queens Tech Academy offers a part-time coding bootcamp based in—yep, you guessed it—Queens.
They bill themselves as a way to learn to code “without quitting your day job”. While their offerings might not be as robust as other options on this list, they have two courses: one in web development and one in iOS mobile development. Each 12-session course costs $3,000 per student and includes weekly homework assignments as well as dedicated instructor support and invites to meetups.
9. Recurse Center’s Coding Retreats

While the Recurse Center isn’t a fit for those just starting out coding, people with as little as six months of experience are welcome to take their courses so access is still pretty broad. Particularly if you’ve just finished your first coding course or two and are looking to continue your education while you’re on the job hunt, Recurse Center could be the place for you.
Located in Brooklyn, this spot offers what they call “coding retreats” and the best part is that they’re free! Recourse’s coding courses are self-driven, project-based experiences that are designed to help programmers get leaps and bounds better at programming. Recurse’s website explains that the goal is to offer an environment that allows students to have as much control over their learning as possible. Rather than selecting courses, students choose projects that they want to be a part of and work that way.
